This tomato dal has the tang and the flavors of tomatoes. Here I have done the tempering first and then sautéed the onions, ginger, garlic and tomatoes. Later arhar dal (pigeon pea lentils) are added and cooked till done.

To begin with this particular recipe, we have to prepare a few ingredients. You can cook tomato daal using 18 ingredients and 9 steps. Here is how you cook it.

The ingredients needed to make Tomato daal:
  1. Prepare 3/4 cup toor dal, soaked 20 minutes
  2. Make ready 2 tomatoes, chopped
  3. Prepare 1 tsp tamarind soaked
  4. Get 1/4 onion, chopped
  5. Prepare 1/4 tsp turmeric
  6. Make ready 1 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder
  7. Prepare 1 chilli, slit
  8. Prepare 3 tsp oil
  9. Get 3 cup water
  10. Make ready 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  11. Prepare 1 tsp mustard
  12. Get 1 tsp urad dal
  13. Prepare 1 tsp cumin / jeera

  15. Take 2 dried red chilli, broken
  16. Take 1 tbsp curry leaves
  17. Take 1 tsp salt
  18. Make ready 2 tbsp coriander, chopped

But somehow I never like boiled taste of onion-tomato in the dal, so I do not prefer this method. Tomato pappu is one of the basic dal dishes from Andhra cuisine. An Andhra meal is incomplete without a dal dish cooked with some veggie. Tomato pappu is eaten with plain rice, ghee and Avakaya (Andhra style hot mango pickle).

Steps to make Tomato daal:
  1. Firstly, in a pressure cooker take ¾ cup toor dal. make sure to soak dal for 20 minutes.
  2. Add 2 tomato, small piece tamarind, ¼ onion, ¼ tsp turmeric, 1 tsp chilli powder.
  3. Further add 1 chilli, 1 tsp oil and 3 cups water, pressure cook for 5 whistles on medium flame or until dal is cooked completely.
  4. Once the pressure releases, mash the dal smooth with the help of a whisk. Keep aside.
  5. In a large kadai heat 2 tbsp oil and saute 4 clove garlic until they change colour slightly.
  6. Also add 1 tsp mustard, 1 tsp urad dal, 1 tsp cumin, pinch hing, 2 dried red chilli and few curry leaves.
  7. Splutter the tempering on low to the medium flame without burning.
  8. Add in cooked tomato dal and 1 tsp salt.Mix well and simmer for 2 minutes or until the flavours are well absorbed.
  9. Finally, add 2 tbsp coriander and serve tomato pappu with hot steamed rice topped with ghee.

This is the only recipe you will ever need to make a delicious, rich and healthy Andhra pappu. Tomato pappu is red lentils that is cooked until fall apart tender and simmered with a ginger, tomato and spice sauce. It has that much protein to compete heavily against a steak. Rice topped with dal and a teaspoon of Ghee - I can have it everyday. Pappu Tomato - Andhra Tomato Dal Tomato Pappu mixed with a dollop of ghee and rice with Mango Avakai is a dearly loved combination and an integral part of everyday Andhra vegetarian food culture.
