Instructions to make Tomato dal:
  1. Wash dal properly then in a saucepan add dal with suffecient water and cook it. Until dal is 75% cooked.
  2. Now heat a kadai and add mustard oil and add black mustard seeds, now add tomato pieces and fry until tomatoes become little soft.
  3. Now add haldi powder, green chilli, salt and sugar as per taste. Saute for few minutes.
  4. Now add 75% cooked dal in this mixture slowly with the help of a spoon and stir continuously.
  5. Cook until dal gets boil completely & 100% cooked. This dal taste will be little sour & sweet. But very delicious. Taste best when served with white rice.

I like to cook the dal in a bowl inside the cooker to avoid spewing of the water from the pressure cooker. The important thing about Andhra style pappu is the consistency of the dal. The roasted garlic and tomato dal that I am showing you here is one of the most simple and flavourful dal you can prepare. It needs minimum ingredients, can be prepared in a few minutes and is one of the best comfort foods in my repertoire. I use toor / arhar dal for this dish.
