The tomato rice is slightly spicy. To reduce the spiciness, just use less amounts of ginger-garlic paste, black pepper and red chilli powder. You can have the tomato rice plain with some papads or chips or serve it with onion tomato raita or boondi raita. This thakkali sadam also goes well in the tiffin box.

Steps to make Tomato rice:
  1. Roast groundnuts, black gram, coriander seeds, 1 TSP cumin, 1 TSP mustard seeds at 1 minute intervals in a pan. Cook for 10 minutes until the colour changes to brown uniformly on low flame.
  2. Add 3/4 cup of roasted bengal gram.
  3. Dice an onion
  4. Add 2 sprigs of curry leaf
  5. Take 1 glass of rice, and 1.5 glasses of water with 1 tsp of oil. Cook in a pressure cooker for 15 minutes on sim.
  6. Cool it on a plate.
  7. Heat butter
  8. Add 1/2 TSP cumin, red chilli, 1/2 TSP mustard seeds, 2 sprigs of curry leaf, and onion in an order. Cook on medium flame.
  9. Make ginger-garlic paste with green chillies. Add it to the pan.
  10. Cut the tomatoes
  11. Add turmeric. Cook until onions are transparent
  12. Add tomatoes and rock salt. Cook with pan closed. Cook until tomatoes become a paste.
  13. Make the peanut mixture into a powder. Dice coriander
  14. Mix it into the tomatoes
  15. Mix coriander.
  16. Mix rice into the mixture after switching off the flame
