Serve steaming hot tomato upma on a cold rainy morning for breakfast along with South Indian Coconut Chutney and Masala Chai. Tomato Upma is a great favourite with my father because it is a bit more tangy than regular upma, and so it is a variation I make often for breakfast. Upma is popular breakfast or "tiffin" (evening snack) in South India. It is easy to make and quite filling.

Steps to make Tomato Upma:
  1. First of all, take a pan and roast sooji in it.
  2. Now take another pan,pour oil on it and heat it.
  3. Put mustard seeds and curry leaves in hot oil to crackle and add chopped onion and peanuts in it and saute it for 2 minutes.
  4. Now add chopped potato and cover it on low flame.
  5. After the potatoes and onion are cooked then add tomatoes and all the spieces. Add salt also and saute it for 5 minutes.
  6. Then add 4 cups of water and boil it and add sooji in it.
  7. Stir it continuously so that no lumps are formed.
  8. You can add more water as the consistency you require. Cook it and cover it for 5 min
  9. Open the lid and add lemon juice in it and your hot tomato Upma is ready to serve. You can garnish with coriander leaves also.

Upma is basically roasted semolina cooked in tempered water. I know, I know that does not sound appetizing. Tomato Upma Recipe is a delicious upma made using tangy tomatoes, with some heat from the green chillies. It is easy to make and is a very perfect breakfast option for the busy days. Serve steaming hot tomato upma on a cold winter mornings for breakfast or for a light dinner on monsoon evenings.
