Poha is a popular Maharashtrian breakfast recipe made from red or white flattened rice, herbs and spices. The popular variation of poha recipes are made by including either potato or onion or both potatoes and onion. The onion poha or kanda poha is a variation of the classic poha with added onions to step up the taste, crunch and awesomeness of this preparation.

  1. Get 1 cup Poha (Flattened Rice)
  2. Prepare 2 tbsp Cooking Oil (Or as required)

  14. Take 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
  15. Take 1 tsp Sugar

The version I am sharing today has No-onion and No-Garlic. This no-onion garlic poha version is our family favourite recipe. Poha is a versatile recipe because You can. Usually, made with onions and potatoes and also known as Kanda Batata Poha.

Instructions to make Onion Poha:
  1. Wash the poha and drain the water well. Add salt and mix it. Set aside and allow it to soften.
  2. Keep all the ingredients ready.
  3. Heat oil in a tadka pan. Add mustard seeds and allow it to crackle. Add cumin seeds and asafoetida. Add chana dal and urad dal and let it fry. Add green chillies and curry leaves and saute.
  4. Transfer this to a pan. Add onions and saute till the onions are translucent.
  5. Add turmeric powder, cumin powder and salt and saute for a minute. Note that salt was already added to the poha. So add accordingly.
  6. Add the soaked poha and mix well.
  7. Add a tablespoon of water and cover the pan with a lid and allow the poha to cook on low flame for about 4-5 minutes.
  8. Add lemon juice and sugar and mix well.
  9. Serve immediately with a hot cup of tea or coffee.

Whereas Kanda means onion and batata means potato. This is a light breakfast recipe for kids and a good option for tiffin box. This is the traditional breakfast recipe very popular in the Western India. While cooking just rinse the poha, don't soak it in water. Kanda Poha or Pohay or Onion Poha Kanda Poha is very tasty and quick filling breakfast.
